Money is the Gravy...Finding the Career that Nourishes You by John Clark talks about leading a life that leads to your bliss. But I prefer the word, "nourish." You don't have to upend your career in this moment to find nourishment. In fact, that's what I like best about Clark's book.
If you're in the wrong career, according to Clark, you are in a state of angst ("A"). If you're in your best career--where skill, enjoyment and meaning all intersect--then you're in bliss ("B"). But there is a continuum of exploring between A and B, balancing practical considerations. I consider money to be one practical consideration; I value financial independence and good decor. And a savings account. The beauty of a continuum is that the process of exploration into "domains of interest" could take 6 months to 6 years, but you don't have to know right now what your true mission or purpose in life is. Life should be flowing, not static, we should be evolving and changing--even if we've been in the same job for 10 years. And life should not be waiting to win the lottery, or retire, or marry a rich guy to start figuring out how to craft a life we're proud of.
So, today's assignment is listing your "domains of interest." For example, travel, politics, food, helping people, books, design, fashion, bugs, finances, sharks, fitness, forensics, fitness. Because once we have our lists in hand, we're going to brainstorm ideas of how to explore that area, or incorporate an action into our life by this weekend.
Happy listing!
